The work of Flavin Architects reveals the influence of New England's tradition of simple building forms and natural materials of stone and cedar. Over the course of the last fifteen years, the firm has built a variety of houses, multi-family housing and corporate offices that relate beautifully to the regional landscape. Each project is carefully tailored to the client's way of living and working, inspiring a range of design styles.
"We're in love with it. Your esthetic sense was superb – the lines on the front of the house are really distinctive. And I'm going to log thousands of hours in the library – it's like a cathedral of knowledge…"
Dane Wittrup, Professor of Chemical Engineering, MIT
Colin Flavin founded the firm in 1991, after studying architecture at MIT and working with the nationally recognized firm of Benjamin Thompson & Associates. Flavin first acquired hands on experience as an architect by building small-scale additions and interiors that used inexpensive materials in expressive ways.
As Flavin Architects has grown, the firm's work continues to build upon its roots of beautifully crafted designs, with projects of a larger scale including corporate headquarters and complete homes. The firm currently includes a staff of eight gifted designers and assistants.
The firm's outstanding design work has been recognized with several awards from the Boston Society of Architects and the American Institute of Architects. Publications include feature articles in the Boston Globe Magazine, Contract Design Magazine and City Living.
Working with Clients
Each design project the firm undertakes begins with listening to the client. What are the space requirements, budget and schedule that will make the project a success for the client? Once these goals are understood, the exciting exchange of ideas about design begins. As the design progresses it is essential that the client understand how the design will look and function when built. Here the latest in computer rendering comes together with Flavin's talent for beautiful hand sketching to make drawings and models that convey the project's appearance when built.
Once we are all in agreement about design and strategy, we then clear the way for the project to move efficiently from the planning phase to reality, from the municipal approval process to the coordination of construction in the field, until a structure or space is brought to life.
"You were able to design and manage facility renovations for our labs, while superbly coordinating a wide array of consultants, contractors and staff scientists."
Joseph Finnigan, Facilities Manager Schepens Eye Research Institute
Services Offered
In addition to architectural design, we offer the range of services that a successful project requires. We are able to navigate complex municipal approvals and building systems to complete work on time and budget. Where we do not offer a needed service in-house, we collaborate with consulting engineers and designers to bring the necessary talent to the project.
