Indoor and outdoor pools were just part of the exercise requirements for this 35,000 square foot health facility, which was also to include everything from state of the art cardiovascular studios to locker rooms. Practical and artistic demands arose when all these indoor amenities had to be confined underground and ringed around the swimming pool, which was a recipe for a wet, moldy cave. Our solution was to line the walls facing the pool with marine grade maple, which allowed for condensation while lending a warm cabin-like feel to the rooms. Outside, by the other pool, we also designed the engaging snack bar kiosk, whose trellised roof seems to float above it, providing both shade and visual interest.
