Rockport, MA
A run-down, chopped-up Colonial Revival teetering on the rocky ledge of the Atlantic was the canvas from which sprung this imminently workable and visually captivating summer home. Working closely with this active young family, we designed a complete renovation, lowering most of the first floor to open up a cramped interior, and increasing the glazing on the Oceanside of the house to create a strong connection between the site and the living space. The multi-paned windows and formal entry of the Georgian street-side facade retained their traditional look, but the proportions were adjusted to accommodate the changed interior dimensions. Attached to the main house by an umbilicus of a glass hall, a petite addition of new construction was built with the same granite, white cedar, and copper as the rest of the renovation but designed to reflect the owners' interest in modern architecture.
