A new addition to an old house requires sensitivity and finesse so that it enhances the beauty of the original building, without spoiling it's character. While doing a complete renovation of the interior, which included bringing in light with a clerestory in the kitchen, we also created a new kitchen and breakfast area that wholly engages the house with the patio and gardens. This area projects out like a bay window true to the vernacular of the house, but is more open, constructed with narrow strips of mahogany and glass, evoking a subtle Japanese aesthetic. Careful coordination between these new lines and the home's original architectural details produced a seamless transition between the old and new, inside and out.
