Modern Addition in Southborough
In Southborough, MA, this modern addition to an historic late 1880s house hovers on piers above the sloped site. Conceived as a floating architectural spit of land above a concrete plinth, the house embraces the property’s natural landscape. Following our distinct style of Natural Modernism, we ensured a light touch on the site and called for native grasses and paper bark maples in the surrounding landscape.
From the beginning, our client sought an addition that was distinctly modern. Inspired by architectural movements in Australia, we chose to highlight the home's heritage and connection to history. A glass bridge connects the addition which adds about 880 square feet to the original's 1,600, reimagining and reconfiguring the home for contemporary life.
