Modern Retreat in the Forest
This home and site were inspired by the concept of a “garden in the woods” that restores and enhances the existing ecological integrity. The house is comprised of three offset volumes that are carefully nestled into the existing topography, minimizing disturbance and preserving the character of the woodland setting. The central public volume—containing the kitchen, living room, dining room, and outdoor patio—links the two private wings. One wing houses the guest quarters and garage, while the other includes the primary suite, family bedrooms, and gym. The three volumes are connected by narrow glass “bridges” that allow light and views to pass through the building. These connections blur the threshold between inside and outside, creating the sensation of moving directly through the landscape.
A dark, handmade Danish brick clads the structure, providing a durable, low-maintenance shell that disappears into the woodland shadows. Inside, wood milled from trees on the property is repurposed for our Flavin screens and built-in furniture. High-quality plaster and natural wood floors create a quiet backdrop for our client’s vast art, sculpture, and antique collection. Durability was a priority throughout, reflected in the custom Bulthaup kitchen and high-quality Keller sliders and Loewen windows. Crafted views through west-facing openings preserves privacy from the neighbors, and connects the viewer to the natural landscape.
Our client began this site planning with the landscape architect prior to onboarding the Flavin team, driven by their goal of recreating a New England three tiered, diverse, mixed deciduous/coniferous forest landscape. Private walking paths on the property will connect to an adjacent nature preserve. As ecological stewards they want to ensure their home is a low impact and harmonious addition to the neighborhood.
